OTHER MUSEUMS IN JAKARTA

In Jakarta city there are various museums preserving the historical fact of the city and also the highlight of events during the development of the city. Beside the main national museum of Indonesia, specially dedicated museum such as to the maritime, wayang puppet, history of Jakarta and others.

Museum Bahari ( Maritime Museum )

Visiting Sunda Kelapa port will be complete if include the visit to Bahari Museum. It is located bfore the port or can be said as the entrance of Sunda Kelapa port. The museum has both collection and building as interesting objects. The building was a warehouse of Dutch East India which was build in 1645 with outside wall was the city enclosure at that time. Before the entrance of the museum is standing the watch tower to oversea the traffic or surrounding, build in 1859. This tower was aimed to watch the coming of enemies, as the Dutch got recurrent opposition during that time. The strongest opposition was coming from Moslem kingdom of Jayakarta. The collection is crafts from all plart of Indonesia old photographs picturing the voyages from Europe to Jakarta passing Eden, Ceylon and Singapore.

Jakarta History Museum
One mark of old Jakarta is Fatahillah Square named after the hero of Moslem kingdom of Jayakarta that took over Sunda Kelapa from Hindu kingdom of Pasundan. The location of Jakarta History Museum is just on the south of this square, the building was Duth government administration for the city in 1627 completed with tower with hanging bell. Part of the room was also used for prisoners of Batavia. In 1830 the head of Indonesian struggle for independence Prince Diponegoro was imprisoned here before his exile in Makassar. Today the museum has many collection of Dutch era furniture and fade pictures of Dutch government generals. As the name bears, the museum is the most valuable property for the history of Jakarta, where people can see a solid proof of the ancient existence of Dutch with Batavia as the center of administration for the city.

Wayang Museum
Located at Fatahillah Square using a building built in 1912. The wayang museum or leather puppet museum exhibit various types of puppets from Indonesia, China, Malaysia, India and Cambodia. This museum has the most complete wayang puppet collection in Indonesia. On the courtyard there are memorials of Dutch governor generals who burried here such as Jan Pieter Zoon Coen, and Anthony van Diemen.

Bali Seni Rupa ( Fine Arts Museum )
The building was built in 1866 for the justice, and now an art museum with collection of prominent artists works such as Affandi, Raden Saleh, and Ida Bagus Made. Part of the building is used as ceramic museum originated from China and Mahapahit Terracotta.
