CLIMATE AND SEASON
The area of Jakarta city is the closest part of Java to
the equator line. For years record the average daily
temperature has been 32oCelcius with high
moisture level around 80%. An increase of temperature
was recorded in 2005 at 33oCelcius, and in
2006 a great increase is recorded at 37oCelcius.
It is very hard indeed to stay open without any shadow
for a time, especially among the concrete areas, or
on the beach. The heavily hardened paths, open spaces,
and roads might contribute the increase of heat beside
the phenomena of global heating. The government of the
city has done a great job to develop the city garden
yet the bulk and uncontrollable influx of urbanization
has caused the plan always legged behind by the changes
of demographic map self changes. The big numbers of
urban also causes great problem in housing, view and
environment maintenance which has made Jakarta like
in a closed theater building, only at the higher resident
and government areas have been zoned well. This probably
also contribute to the increasing of temperature in
Jakarta itself. From October to April Jakarta enters
the wet season, and normally low places along the sides
of the rivers are flooded, meanwhile most of the poor
urban and local built their houses along the sides of
the rivers. Some times the flood last for three or five
days that make the residents of this part must be evacuated
to higher places. During May to September Jakarta is
experiencing dry season, but this year of 2006 already
November there is no sign of rain fall. During dry season
there are many poorer settlements are under threat of
natural disaster such as burn by electric short
contact, or the most careless people by throwing burning
smokes and others. The level of sea water at some places
in Jakarta especially on the shore settlements is higher
and this is indeed risk of receiving yearly flood. The
only area that preserves the water is the area of Bogor
highland, a place around 50 kms south of Jakarta which
is actually also the source of fresh water. With the
shifting of land use from open garden into various villas
and new settlements has caused the potency of the area
as water preservation has been decreasing tremendously. In
this situation when heavy rain falls the flood in full
volume flows through pitches and rivers toward lowland,
especially to the area of Jakarta city.
In such a typical strong tropical temperature with full
sunshine to the earth, one has to choose suitable clothing,
especially if one has to be much of his/her time at
the open place. The best dress for this condition is
cotton that can absorb water or hygroscopic fabric to
avoid skin burn which can grow fungus. Beside hygroscopic
character dress must be able to give most vent to the
body, simply it is able to give the circulation of the
air between the body and the dress quickly. Sunscreen,
hat or other shading would be necessary when one is
exposed to the sun, and for those people come from sub-tropical
countries sunscreen would be necessary to protect the
skin. Alcoholic drink is not good for tropical area,
which can make one losing appetite, and if this happened
a trouble to the body, and a quick dehydration can be
very common. During wet season one has to be careful
to visit poorer area of the city, as sometimes diary
or dengue fever can infect local people without realizing
before. It is lucky that all interesting places in Jakarta
visited by the tourist are far from such parts of the
city.
